Recognition of IS-04 and IS-05 celebrates the open industry collaboration that made interoperable IP media workflows practical at scale

BOTHELL, Wash. — Oct. 19, 2026 — The Advanced Media Workflow Association (AMWA) has received a 2026 Technology & Engineering Emmy Award for the development of AMWA NMOS Discovery, Registration and Connection. The award is shared with Sony Corporation, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), and Streampunk Media Ltd., recognizing their collective contributions to establishing NMOS as an industry-standard control framework for networked media production.

The award was presented Oct. 14 during the joint Engineering, Science & Technology Emmy Awards ceremony at the Television Academy’s Saban Media Center in North Hollywood, California. Brad Gilmer, executive director of AMWA, accepted the award on behalf of the association.

The honor recognizes two foundational Networked Media Open Specifications: IS-04, the NMOS Discovery and Registration Specification, and IS-05, the NMOS Device Connection Management Specification. IS-04 gives devices, senders, receivers, and other media resources a common, vendor-neutral way to be discovered and registered on an IP network. IS-05 enables controllers to establish and manage connections between compatible senders and receivers.

By adding discovery and connection management to SMPTE ST 2110 transport, IS-04 and IS-05 established an open framework for multi-vendor IP production. Interoperability testing, automated test suites, open-source implementations, and broad vendor adoption have made that framework a practical foundation for modern media workflows. Developed through AMWA’s Networked Media Incubator, NMOS reflects the contributions of end users, manufacturers, systems integrators, developers, and industry organizations working together to solve shared operational challenges.

“I’m always amazed by how much our industry can accomplish through open collaboration, and I’m delighted to see that collective effort recognized with this Emmy,” said Brad Gilmer, executive director of AMWA. “NMOS grew from end users, manufacturers, integrators, and developers bringing real operational needs and engineering expertise into the same room. We are grateful to the many AMWA members and contributors whose work made IS-04 and IS-05 a practical reality for broadcasters and media organizations around the world. This award belongs to that community, and it encourages us to keep building the open, interoperable foundations our industry will need next.”

The honor is AMWA’s second Technology & Engineering Emmy in two years, following its 2025 recognition for the standardization of SMPTE ST 2067, the Interoperable Master Format.
